    I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, number 3 not quite so much, and after struggling to reach halfway, I'm reluctantly giving up on this one. It seems to me that the series is becoming increasingly 'gung ho', and the only people who matter after the war are the military. The 'sheep' (as the non-military are called) are portrayed as just that, with not a single lead character from the flock of ordinary people. All the care, attention and detail has gone into painting the Eagles' and their enemies' characters, and the ordinary people are just blurry impressions in the background. I actively seek out fiction with military threads running through, particularly in SF, but increasingly that's all this series is about - how the Eagles are going to rebuild the world (or America, which appears to be the same thing as far as the series is concerned). As someone with no military training and no supernatural powers, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to relate to the characters, or to care about what happens to them. Brady has become a whining chauvinist, Angela is now Superwoman, Sam is currently inconsequential, but will no doubt turn into Superwoman 2, and Adrian is a golden All-American demigod (who won't have none of them gays in HIS army). Nothing significantly new has happened in this book - it has the feel of a rather slow post-apocalyptic military soap opera, and even after four books the story on the tropical island is still completely irrelevant and unconnected to the main story. The main characters are developing, but the story isn't - it's virtually at a standstill. I'm disappointed, because the writing is good, the premise is full of potential, and it started so well. This book IS well written, and may suit you if you like super-characters (and nothing but) and if you don't mind hundreds of pages with no real plot development, but it's not for me.

    I have just read all 4 books while on holiday and have been unable to stop reading or go on to the other books I had downloaded. Brutal at times. Really makes you think how people would behave and survive after a nuclear war. Am awaiting book 5.

    This latest segment from the 'Life after the war' series has built upon the sound foundation erected by the previous books wonderfully .Angela white really hit the ground running in the early books but now she and the story are building both the pace and the suspense . I REALLY can't wait for the next instalment !!! But respectfully ask the author not to rush and spoil one of the very best series I have started in a long time . " You know what needs doing Angie" .when it's ready let us have it :)
